Announcement:

I invite you to register for a continuation of my fluid mechanics course
"Special Topics in Fluid Mechanics - 22984 - MATH 581". In the first
part of the course we will follow the same book as before: Acheson
"Elementary fluid dynamics". Topics to be covered include boundary layers,
very viscous flows, classical airfoil theory, Kutta-Joukowski theorem, e.c.
In the second part of the course we will focus on some of the mathematical
aspects of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations, such as conservation laws,
existence and uniqueness of solutions, attractors. The organization of the lectures
will be much the same as previously, which will include slide presentations.
I will also encourage students to present short talks in class or undertake independent projects.
The prerequisite for this course is Math 580. I may waive it if you have taken
vector calculus and basic differential equations before. A preliminary exam for
math students will be offered at the end of the semester.
