A staff development opportunity for experienced district teams 

Program description: 
The Math Trailblazers District Leadership Seminar prepares teams of experienced Math Trailblazers users to assume leadership roles in the implementation of Math Trailblazers in their schools or districts. 

Experienced TIMS Project curriculum developers and implementation support staff will lead workshops and discussions. Participants will explore specific implementation issues of particular concern to both schools and districts: 

  • training new teachers to use Math Trailblazers
  • supporting change at the school and district level; 
  • strategies for working with special needs students; 
  • timelines for appropriate implementation; 
  • developing an on-going staff development program; 
  • parent education; and 
  • allocating resources. 

This program is funded in part by the National Science Foundation. 

Intended audience:
This seminar is designed for teams of classroom teachers and district administrators. Members of each district team must have a minimum of one year's experience with Math Trailblazers implementation. Team members must also have a designated role in district implementation support in the upcoming year. Registration is limited to 35 participants.

Math Trailblazers Intial Training: The Summer Institute

Intended Audience:
The Summer Institutes are designed for classroom teachers and district administrators new to Math Trailblazers.

Program Description:
These four-day institutes are designed to provide a thorough grounding in the content and underlying philosophy of Math Trailblazers.  Each day's sessions require active participation in mathematical activities, laboratory experiments, review of videotapes from classroom experiences, and discussions among colleagues.  Implementation of the first units in each grade and the “Number Sense and Operations” strand will be emphasized.  Participants will also have the opportunity to discuss pedagogical ideas important to the successful implementation of Math Trailblazers

This program is funded by Kendall/Hunt Publishing, the National Science Foundation, and the Illinois State Board of Education.  It is directed by the Teaching Integrated Mathematics and Science (TIMS) Project.

Math Trailblazers Workshop for Professional Developers

Intended Audience:
This workshop is designed for classroom teachers and district administrators who have a minimum of two years’ experience with Math Trailblazers implementation. Attendance at a previous Math Trailblazers Summer Institute is preferred.  Registration is limited to 30 participants. 

Program description
The Math Trailblazers Workshop for Professional Developers prepares experienced classroom teachers and district administrators to present curriculum materials and strategies to teachers and administrators who are adopting Math Trailblazers

Experienced curriculum developers and implementation support staff for the Teaching Integrated Mathematics & Science (TIMS) Project will lead the workshop sessions.  Participants will review professional development materials developed by the TIMS Project and discuss presentation designs.  Sessions will be offered on the basic philosophy and pedagogy of Math Trailblazers as well as separate topics for new and experienced workshop presenters.   During the workshop, participants in small groups will prepare, present and discuss brief presentations on assigned topics. 
Successful completion of this workshop prepares participants to teach at the Math Trailblazers Summer Institute 

Details:
The 2004 Math TrailblazersWorkshop for Professional Developers will be held in late March or early April.  Contact the TIMS Project for details.

This program is funded by the National Science Foundation's National Implementation Project and Kendall/Hunt Publishing.  There is no charge to participants.
