Math Trailblazers Implementation Support

Implementation of Math Trailblazers will be much more effective if it is accompanied by a good staff development program. A four-day orientation to Math Trailblazers is made available to schools through Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company. We recommend that schools supplement this with additional staff development, preferably to support teachers at least through the initial year of implementation. The TIMS Project worked with districts to document successful implementation stories.

Written documents to support implementation include several sections of the Teacher Implementation Guide (TIG)—especially the TIMS Tutors, the Assessment section, Foundations of Math Trailblazers, and the portions that outline the curriculum’s alignment with the NCTM Standards—are ready-made to be used within the context of a staff development program.

The TIMS Project is also currently developing Teacher Enhancement Resource Modules (TERMs) for the second edition. The TERMs include presenter's guides for a series of workshops.

The Math Trailblazers Implementation Center will provide specific suggestions for local staff development efforts related to Math Trailblazers including professional development programs that address general issues regarding selection and implementation of Standards–based curricula. You can contact the Math Trailblazers Implementation Center at 1-800-454-TIMS or by e-mail at tims@uic.edu. (The Math Trailblazers Implementation Center is a satellite of the ARC Center, an NSF-funded project that supports implementation of reform curricula.)

Currently there are three professional development opportunities: Math Trailblazers Strategic Planning Seminar, Math Trailblazers Workshop for Professional Developers and the Math Trailblazers Summer Institute.
