The following colloquium is jointly sponsored by UIC's Center
for Urban Educational Research and Development, College of Education,
and Institute for Mathematics and Science Education
Since the mid-1980s, Dr. Ubiritan D'Ambrosio has developed a theoretical framework of ethnomathematics instruction, which builds on the cultural perspectives students bring to the classroom to solve critical social problems using mathematical concepts. His daughter, Dr. Beatriz Silva D'Ambrosio has worked with teachers in an Indianapolis elementary school to apply this conceptual framework to teaching math for social justice. In this colloquium, the presenters will discuss the theoretical framework of ethnomathematics and how mathematical ideas have developed taking into account societal issues such as population growth, housing, environment, wealth comparisons, and health care. They will also address the challenges of implementing a multicultural approach to teaching mathematics in an Indianapolis elementary school. The epigraph to Ausubel's Educational Psychology reads " The most important single factor influencing learning is what the learner already knows. Ascertain this and teach him accordingly." This seminar will present concept mapping as one tool capable of both simultaneously "ascertaining" and "teaching accordingly" per Ausubel's call to action. by the University of Illinois at Chicago's Department of Mathematics,
Statistics, and Computer Science and Institute for Mathematics
and Science Education.
Liping Ma's recent research and book, Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics, have sparked intense discussion about the mathematics preparation of elementary school teachers. In her presentation, Dr. Ma will address the issue of what kind of mathematics a teacher should know in order to teach elementary school mathematics. She will consider the specific features of teachers' math subject matter knowledge in the U.S. and China and how these features affect students' learning.
