Accessing Files in Your Department Account from Windows XP

The department offers a Microsoft-compatible file server, which provides direct access to your files stored in your department account from your Windows XP desktop. This includes files stored in your home directory and your personal web site in your public_html folder.

1. Open the Start menu, open "All Programs", open "Accessories", and choose "Windows Explorer"
2. In the Address bar, type

   \\cifs.math.uic.edu\username

   where "username" is your username
3. When prompted, type your username and password

Windows Explorer will display the files stored in your department account, including your public_html folder.

If the windows explorer hangs, apply patch WinXP_PlainPassword.reg and reboot your computer. Then try the preceding instructions again.

If the computer crashes when you save a file, apply patch KB906866.reg and reboot your computer. Then try the preceding instructions again.
