Printing From a Windows(older versions) Machine

If you are having trouble printing from a Windows machine, here are a few things you should try.

  1. Check that you are printing files in the correct format -- our PostScript printers won't print dvi files.
  2. If you have trouble printing a Microsoft Word document, try opening a new document and copying the contents of your old document into it. Sometimes the header information in old Word documents prevents printing.
  3. Add a printer by following the procedure described below. If this solves the problem, delete the old printer that didn't work.
  4. Send email to consult@math.uic.edu describing your problem in detail.

NOTICE: You must have an account on the math.uic.edu network in order to print on the department printers from your office Windows computer. Your userid on the math network must match your userid on your PC. Please request an account from a systems administrator as soon as possible if you don't already have one. If you have an account already, please make sure the name you use to log on to your office computer is the same as the one you use to log on to math.uic.edu. You may also have to contact consult@math.uic.edu to be registered in the samba database

Configuring a new PC to use the department printers

In order for your PC to find the printers it must be configured to use our WINS server. Use the procedure below to configure it.
  1. Check to see that you are logged on to Windows. Open the Start menu. There should be a Log Off option at the bottom of it. If your name doesn't show up there, you are not logged on. You should log off and then log on again using your math network username (mathid).
  2. Choose Settings from the Start menu. Select Control Panels and open the Network Control Panel.
  3. Scroll through the list of network components and select the TCP/IP ethernet connection.
  4. Choose properties and go to the WINS configuration page.
  5. Enable WINS resolution, and fill in the blank labeled WINS server with 131.193.178.229. Double check that you are on the WINS page and not on the IP address page of the properties panel. Click OK.
  6. Open the Network identification panel. Set your workgroup to MSCS.
  7. Exit the Network control panel; answer "yes" when asked if you wish to reboot.
  8. If, after rebooting, your computer complains that it has detected another machine using the same IP address, turn it off immediately and get help from a systems administrator.

Adding a printer to your PC

If your computer is more than a year old, first download the Lexmark Optra T printer driver installer, available at:
ftp://ftp.math.uic.edu/pub/windows/mpwn955e.exe
Start this program; it will start the printer wizard and pop up a window telling you what to do when you reach the driver selection panel. After you have finished adding the printer, you can delete the driver installer program.

Use the printer wizard to add a printer as follows:

  1. Choose Settings -> Printers from the Start Menu.
    Double click on Add Printer
  2. Answer the questions in the wizard as follows:

  3. Choose "Network Printer"
Click on Browse to look for printers on the network:

Printer Name Number Printer Location Printer description Timings
    seo1200 1
    SEO 1200 HP LaserJet 8150 Series 8:00AM-6:00PM
    seo736 1 SEO 736 Lexmark Optra T614 8:00AM-6:00PM
    seo308 2 SEO 308 hp LaserJet 4250 & Lexmark Optra T612 available 24 hours
seo430 1 Mathematical Sciences Learning Center hp LaserJet 8000 8:00AM-6:00PM

  4. Choose the manufacturer and model of printer from the lists provided. If Lexmark is not listed, either use the driver installer mentioned above and follow the instructions in the Lexmark printer installer popup window or try substituting an HP LaserJet 4Si/MX PS driver.
  5. If asked, say you wish to keep the existing driver.
  6. Name your new printer anything you like -- we suggest using informative names like "308 simplex" or "736 duplex".
  7. If you want this to be your default printer, indicate this on the next panel.
  8. Agree to print a test page, and see if it worked. IF YOU HAVE NOT LOGGED ON TO WINDOWS, IT WILL NOT WORK.

To be a good citizen and save paper by printing on both sides, follow the instructions at http://www.math.uic.edu/Docs/Printing/duplex.html. If the instructions above don't work, try the following:

Select your printer's icon.
From the menu select:
File -> Properties -> Paper -> More Options ... -> flip on long side

Deleting a printer from your PC

WARNING. If your computer tells you that some files are no longer needed after you delete a printer, do not agree to delete those files. If you accidentally delete a printer you wished to keep, you can restore it by following the steps above unless you've deleted the drivers for it.
  1. In the settings window, double click on:

  2. Printers
  3. For each printer you wish to remove:
select the printer, then use the menu to select File->Delete.
