Frequently Asked Questions about PC's running Windows

1. My default printer is in 736 but I want to print a TeX document in 308. How do I do that?
   A: On the printing prompt screen, change the printer name to seo308 if you can find it in the pull-down menu. If seo308 printer cannot be found, it has not been properly installed on your computer. Please email consult@math.uic.edu if you need help for the printer installation.

2. All the mail that used to be in my mailbox is gone. Where did it go?
   A: Some mail readers, like Eudora and Netscape, collect mail from your mailbox and store it in the directory where your email reader was installed. If you recently read mail on a different computer, go back to that computer and check if your mail is there.

3. How can I view compressed PostScript files on my PC?
   A: We recommend using GSview.

5. I need to transfer a file from a Unix machine to my PC on a floppy disk, but the file is too big. What can I do?
   A: Use the Unix command split -b 1440000 filename to split the file into floppy sized pieces, where filename is the name of your file. This will give you a bunch of files named xaa, xab, etc. Use the instructions on our web page to copy the pieces onto disks, then copy them onto your PC. Use the DOS command copy to recombine the files: copy /b xaa+xab+xac filename.

6. How can I install antivirus software on my computer?
   A: UIC has a site license for Norton Antivirus. Instructions for installation are at http://www.uic.edu/depts/accc/software/antivirus/.
7. How do I change my password?
   A: Login to the SSH Secure Shell Client and type passwd and follow the instructions. You will be asked to type your old password and then to type your new password twice. If you don't have SSH Secure Shell Client, go to the command prompt and type telnet shell.math.uic.edu and then login with your math department username and password. Then follow the instructions. You will be asked to type your old password and then to type your new password twice.
