COURSE DESCRIPTION
STAT 101 is an introductory course in statistics intended for students in a wide variety of areas of study. Topics discussed include displaying and describing data, the normal curve, regression, probability, statistical inference, confidence intervals, and hypothesis tests with applications in the real world. Students also have the opportunity to analyze data sets using technology in their weekly laboratory discussions.
COURSE MATERIALS
STAT 101 requires a textbook and an access code for the online homework system MyStatLab. You can purchase these separately or together. The UIC bookstore is offering discounted pricing on a bundle consisting of the textbook and an access code for MyMathLab.
The textbook is Intro Stats by De Veaux, Velleman and Bock, 3rd edition, published by Pearson.
QUIZZES AND HOMEWORK
Quizzes will be taken using MyMathLab in the assigned computer lab. Quizzes are given every week, starting with the 2nd week of the semester. Each quiz covers the previous week's material. Students will have three attempts for each quiz and quizzes are timed. Make-up quizzes will not be given; missing a quiz results in a score of 0. The two lowest quiz scores will be dropped at the end of the semester when computing the course grade.
Homework is also done online with MyMathLab, but can be done from any computer with internet access, such as those in computer labs, the library, the Math Sciences Learning Center, or a personal computer. There is no limit on the number of trials on homework, and MyMathLab saves only the best score. But the assignment must be submitted online before the due date in order for the score to count towards the course grade. The two lowest homework scores will be dropped at the end of the semester when computing the course grade.
EXAMS
The two midterms are given during class, in the normal lecture room. The final exam is also given in the lecture room, at the time specified in the UIC final exam schedule
All students are responsible for the full work of the course. This includes knowing the material, taking tests, doing the homework, knowing the dates when tests are held and any announcement that may be made in class. If you have a valid excuse for missing a midterm let me know in advance. In case you are ill on the day of a midterm, contact me as soon as you can. On return you must give a written explanation of your absence. There will be no make up tests. If your excuse is valid your missing exam score will be replaced by your final exam score (scaled of course. e.g. you get 180 out of 200 in the final, your missing exam score will be replaced by 90%). Otherwise it counts zero. There will be no make-up for the final exam.
GRADING
The course grade is based on total points, with letter grades assigned on 90-80-70-60 scale.
The 500 points are assigned as follows:
