Introduction to Higher Geometry

- PREREQUISITES:
- Grade of C or better in MATH 425 and 330.
- DESCRIPTION:
- For graduate students in mathematics teacher education programs. Other students enroll in MATH 440. Projective geometry, as an extension of Euclidean geometry, treated synthetically andor algebraically. Desargues' and Pappus' theorems, subgeometries, conics and the underlying skew field.

Practicum in Teaching Elementary School Mathematics

- Admission to the MS in the Teaching of Mathematics program Option for Elementary school teachers and consent of instructor.
- DESCRIPTION:
- Culminating experience for students in the Teaching of Mathematics program Option for Elementary school teachers. Major project is required. Supervised weekly seminars.

- Text: Mathematics for High School Teachers -- An Advanced Perspective, Usiskin Peressini et al., Prentice Hall. Students will discuss analyses of alternate definitions and approaches to math ideas; extensions and generalizations of familiar theorems; discussions of historical contexts in which concepts arose and have changed; applications of math in a wide range of settings; analyses of common problems of high school math from a deeper math level; demonstrations of alternate ways of approaching problems with and without technology; connections between ideas studied in various courses; relationships of ideas studied in school to ideas students encounter in later study.
