Faculty Positions

The Department has active research programs in a broad spectrum of centrally important areas of pure mathematics, computational and applied mathematics, combinatorics, mathematical computer science and scientific computing, probability and statistics, and mathematics education.


Assistant / Associate / Full Professor

Applications are invited for a Tenure Track (Assistant Professor) or Tenured (Associate/Full Professor) positions. The positions are effective August 16, 2015 and the salary is negotiable. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in mathematics, computer science, statistics, mathematics education or related field, an outstanding research record, and evidence of strong teaching ability. Final authorization of the position is subject to the availability of state funding.

Research Assistant Professor

Research Assistant Professorship. This is a non-tenure track position, normally renewable annually to a maximum of three years. This position carries a teaching responsibility of three courses per year, and the expectation that the incumbent play a significant role in the research life of the Department. Applicants must show evidence of outstanding research potential in mathematics, computer science, statistics, mathematics education or related field, and should expect to have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree by the start date.

Clinical Assistant / Associate Professor

The Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago invites applications for two full-time, non-tenure track positions of Clinical Assistant or Clinical Associate Professor. These positions are effective August 16, 2015. Final authorization of positions is subject to the availability of state funding.

The first position will be responsible for coordination of calculus instruction. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in the Mathematical Sciences.

The second position will be responsible for coordination of our pre-calculus and remedial courses. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in the Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics Education or closely related fields.

Responsibilities for both positions include teaching, coordination of courses, curricular development and reform, and oversight of placement.

Applicants must demonstrate exceptional competence in teaching and excellent organizational and leadership skills. Applications should include a cover letter that specifies whether the application is for calculus coordination, remedial coordination, or both; vita; teaching statement; a description of teaching, leadership, and organizational experiences; and at least three (3) letters of recommendation focusing primarily on teaching, curriculum development, organization, and leadership.

Clinical Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education

The Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago invites applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor position in Mathematics Education. This position is effective August 16, 2015. Final authorization of position is subject to the availability of state funding.

Position: Clinical Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education

Qualifications: Applicants for the position must hold a doctorate in mathematics education, mathematics, learning sciences or related field by August 16, 2015; a strong mathematics background; and have a strong record of high quality/effective teaching or demonstrate the potential for such. Experience with research or evaluation related to K-12 education, or K-12 teaching experience is desirable. Experience in and commitment to working in a multicultural environment with large numbers of students of diverse backgrounds is desirable.

Responsibilities: Position responsibilities include teaching graduate and undergraduate mathematics education and mathematics courses, as well as participating in the Mathematics Education Committee, guiding the ongoing development and improvement of the department’s teacher preparation programs at both the elementary and secondary levels. Candidates will be expected to advise undergraduate and master’s students in the teacher education program, and supervise student teachers. Candidates will also be expected to assist the Director of the Office of Mathematics Education with administrative duties including course scheduling, curriculum development, as well as serving as a liaison to the College of Education

Mathematics Education at UIC: The successful candidate will join a growing Mathematics Education faculty within the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science that includes 5 mathematics educators and 3 mathematicians. The Department has a long track record in teacher preparation, professional development and curriculum development. Faculty research programs include pre-service teacher education, mathematics identity, mathematics curriculum development, cryptography education, and learning of algebra. Within the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, the Office of Mathematics Education oversees preservice programs for secondary (at the B.S. and M.S.T level) and K-9 teachers (about ¼ of elementary education majors at UIC complete the concentration in mathematics) and Masters programs for in-service teachers at both the secondary and middle school level. There are extensive opportunities to teach courses designed for teachers. There are currently several externally funded research projects, many of which involve collaborations between local school districts and an interdisciplinary group of faculty and researchers. Given existing relationships between the Department and Chicago Public Schools (CPS), candidates would have the potential for collaboration with CPS via professional development and/or other research projects. Successful candidates will also have the opportunity to collaborate with an active Mathematics Education faculty in the College of Education (including 3 mathematics educators), as well as with faculty in the Learning Sciences Research Institute (including over 20 faculty and researchers).
