Letters of Recommendation
The MSCS Graduate Studies program offers their graduates and post-docs the opportunity to maintain a file of recommendation letters in the department indefinitely. These letters are kept confidential, can be updated throughout your career, and will be mailed upon request to prospective employers.
This service eliminates the need for you to ask the same professor to write and mail a letter on your behalf each time you apply for a job. You can access this service even after you leave UIC and seek your next place of employment.
How to get started...
Contact three (3) or more faculty to write a letter on your behalf. Select faculty who are familiar with your teaching, research, and/or academic background. The letters must be typed on letterhead stationery, signed, and sealed in an envelope.
Inform the faculty member to mail the letter to:
Assistant Director of Graduate StudiesUniversity of Illinois at ChicagoDepartment of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (MC 249)851 South Morgan StreetChicago, IL 60607-7045
When you begin applying....
- Prepare adhesive mailing labels (one per place of employment) and deliver them to the Graduate Studies Office. Attach any special instructions for the mailing, such as upcoming application deadlines or specific letters that you want sent.
- The cost of the first 100 letters is covered by the department. After that, you must enclose postage along with the labels for subsequent mailings. Contact the office to determine the cost of postage required for your particular mailing.
What happens next?
The letters on file will be duplicated according to your instructions. A cover letter from the Assistant Director of Graduate Studies will be attached, verifying that the letters are confidential. The letters will be placed in envelopes displaying the department's return address with your label affixed. All letters are mailed first class. Allow 3-5 days for the mailing to be sent.
