Letters of Recommendation

The MSCS Graduate Studies program offers MSCS graduates and post-docs the opportunity to maintain a file of recommendation letters in the Department indefinitely. These letters are kept confidential, can be updated throughout your career, and will be mailed or emailed upon request to prospective employers.

This service eliminates the need for you to ask the same professor to write and send a letter on your behalf each time you apply for a job. You can access this service even after you leave UIC and seek your next place of employment. Outside letters from subsequent places of employment can be added to the file.

About the letters...

  • The letters must be on LETTERHEAD and must be SIGNED. You should contact 3-5 professors to write recommendation letters on their behalf. Select faculty who are familiar with your teaching, research, and/or academic background.

  • Professors can send a pdf copy of the letter electronically to dgs@math.uic.edu OR send a hard copy via the US Postal Service to:

    Assistant Director of Graduate Studies
    University of Illinois at Chicago
Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (MC 249)
    851 South Morgan Street
    Chicago, IL 60607-7045

When you begin applying....

If you need the letters mailed to prospective employers via the US Postal Service:

  • Prepare adhesive mailing labels (one per place of employment) and deliver them to the Graduate Studies Office. Attach any special instructions for the mailing, such as upcoming application deadlines or specific letters that you want sent.
  • The cost of the first 100 letters is covered by the Department. After that, you must enclose postage along with the labels for subsequent mailings. Contact the office to determine the cost of postage required for your particular mailing.
  • Allow 3-5 days for your letters to be processed since job hunting is seasonal and several students will request to have letters sent at the same time.

If you need the letters sent to prospective employers via an email address:

  • Send a request to dgs@math.uic.edu. Include the email address for each prospective employer, mention application deadlines, and indicate which letters you want sent.
  • Allow 3-5 days for your letters to be processed since job hunting is seasonal and several students will request to have letters sent at the same time.

What happens next?

The original letters are kept on file. Copies or scans of these letters will be sent according to your instructions. A cover letter from the Assistant Director of Graduate Studies will be attached, verifying that the letters are confidential. The letters will be retained indefinitely; additional letters can be added to your file as you advance through your career.
