The University of Illinois at Chicago invites you and your CPS colleagues to the:

Spring 2008 CPS-UIC Math Forum

(an expansion of the former Algebra Symposium)

Monday, April 28
4:30 to 7:30 PM
2nd Floor (TAFT Hall)

Apr 28: Grades 6-12 Math -- "From the ridiculous to the sublime"

For our year-end Math Forum we'll discuss two extremes:

  • Mistakes in student work and how some teachers make use of them. Is canceling the 6 in 16/64 (or the 9 in 19/95) the most outrageous example you've seen?
  • Challenging problems and their place in the classroom. What golden nuggets have you run across which really stimulate critical thinking? Please browse through the article Lockhart's Lament to see some examples.
John Baldwin and John Masley will facilitate discussion. Come hear what some of your peers have experienced. Come as a group for some departmental team-building. Our grant has expired so there is no stipend, but we'll provide a light dinner, 3 CPDU credits, and parking reimbursement for this time if you bring your parking ticket to the meeting.

4:30 to 4:45: Sign in, informal networking
4:45: Welcome and introduction of the questions for small group discussion.
5:00: Small group workshops and networking
5:35: Readouts from the small groups to the whole team.
5:55: Light supper and networking
6:25: Follow on with small groups and a readout
7:15: Wrap-up, forms and survey, bring your parking ticket for validation
