Abstract: The International comparisons of mathematics learning, like TIMSS and PISA, reveal that our students fare worst in geometry and measurement. Arguably, this occurs because of inadequate effort to help students develop geometric thinking (including thinking related to geometric measurement). Deciding to increase the effort leads quickly to the question: What constitutes appropriate geometry knowledge for teaching beginning geometry? The session will explore this question, from the perspective of a set of professional-development materials currently in field test, Fostering Geometric Thinking (FGT) in the Middle Grades. FGT reflects the belief that teachers should have knowledge of:

  • geometry content central to the middle grades
  • the development of student geometric thinking that pertains to content central to the middle grades
  • research related to common student conceptual hurdles in middle-grades geometry and geometric measurement
  • ways in which middle-grades geometry is groundwork for high school geometry
We will focus on this last topic and its converse; what do secondary teachers need to know about the learning of geometry in middle school? We also explore the hypothesis that geometry affords superior opportunities to foster English Language Learners' skills in mathematical communication.

Mark Driscoll, Co-Director of the Center for Leadership and Learning Communities at EDC, has directed a range of teacher enhancement, leadership, and materials development projects at EDC. Recent examples of materials are the MathFINDER CD-ROM, the MathPartners tutoring materials for America Counts, the book Fostering Algebraic Thinking: A Guide for Teachers in Grades 6-10 and the Fostering Algebraic Thinking Toolkit. Currently, he co-directs the project, Fostering Geometric Thinking in the Middle Grades, and developing teacher professional development materials as well as a multimedia book to be published by Heinemann in Fall-Winter 2007-8.
