-
Project Director
Project Title
- UIC Initiative for Math and Science Content Education
Goals
- The first goal of this project is that all K-12 science and mathematics teachers have appropriate endorsements and degree-equivalent understandings of content.
- The second goal is the development of a network of research mathematicians and scientists, mathematics and science educators, and teachers that enhances the general discipline expertise of the teachers and directly affects teaching practice, both in the classroom and in school choices of curriculum and educational policy.
Objectives for 2004
- Identify 100 teachers in mathematics and science and their particular needs for endorsements and courses in mathematics and chemistry content.
- Initiate and expand course- and workshop-based learning experiences for these teachers to meet their needs. These will be designed so that sustainability over time is likely.
- Develop a network wherein faculty, experienced teachers, and teachers undergoing professional development interact over time within CPS in the improvement of individual teacher practice.
- Create a model of classroom practice where (a) the reflective assessment of student knowledge is the basis of improved instruction and (b) deepened content knowledge for the teacher is used in a deliberate fashion to enhance student learning.
Objectives for 2005
- Identify 100 more teachers in mathematics and science and their particular needs for endorsements and courses in mathematics and chemistry content.
- Continue with the other goals for 2004.
- Develop the network of mathematics teachers to: facilitate placement of student teachers in CPS high schools; focus on assessment; acquaint UIC faculty with CPS high schools. Develop the Chemistry high school network and expand the Chemistry in Community network.
Objectives for 2006
