Mathematics Teacher Education Programs

The University of Illinois at Chicago currently offers five degree programs plus additional Illinois teaching certification to prepare mathematics teachers. These programs, with the exception of the bachelor's in elementary education, are administered by the Office of Mathematics Education (OME) of the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science. Professional certification programs are administered through the College of Education.
  1. Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education
    Degree from the College of Education with additional opportunities for specialization in mathematics.

  2. Bachelor of Science in Teaching Mathematics in Secondary School
    Program for the preparation of high school math teachers.

  3. Master of Science in Teaching Elementary School Mathematics
    Program to prepare elementary teachers for leadership roles in mathematics education.

  4. Master of Science in Teaching Secondary School Mathematics for certified teachers
    Program to prepare secondary teachers for leadership roles in mathematics education.

  5. Master of Science in Teaching Secondary School Mathematics for students seeking teaching certification.
    Program to provide secondary certification for those seeking to teach high school mathematics.

  6. Doctor of Arts in Mathematics
    This program develops breadth of mathematical expertise, appropriate for teaching at community colleges and four-year colleges.

  7. Endorsement Courses
    Courses are offered both in the regular program and through Continuing Education which meet the state requirements for a middle school mathematics endorsement. The exact choice of courses must be made individually. The student must apply directly to the state for the endorsement (unless they complete a degree at UIC at the same time).

Faculty members direct a substantial number of outreach programs for schools, children, teachers, and families. Faculty members are also authors of nationally influential curricula for mathematics and science education.
