Tips for Preparing your Graduate School Application
These helpful pointers come directly from our Graduate Studies Office, and can help you stay on top of the graduate school application process.
Apply Early
Identify deadlines for applications and financial aid (assistantships, fellowships). There may be two separate deadlines for admission and aid. Deadlines may occur as early as 9 months in advance of the term that you wish to begin your studies. Always apply well before the stated deadline.
Your Application Packet
Keep copies of all your application materials. Your materials may get lost in the mail or in cyberspace. Review your copy of the application before making campus visits.
Application Fees
Keep canceled checks and credit card statements showing that you've paid the application fees for each school.
Transcripts
Keep several sealed, official copies of transcripts from each school you have attended. Transcripts can be lost in the mail, and you may need a back-up. Send copies to the admissions office and to the department you are applying to.
Letters
Select 3-4 professors that can write strong letters attesting to your ability to succeed in a graduate program, and waive your right to view the letter. Keep a list of your references with their addresses, phone numbers and email and be prepared to remind them of critical deadlines.
Personal Statement
Write a personal statement that describes your development in your field. Include non- course related experiences such as teaching, relevant employment, and publications, noting how these have helped shape your plans for graduate study and your future career.
Exams
Contact the academic department to determine which exams are required (GRE, GMAT, etc.).
Make Contact
Before you apply, make a phone or email contact with the graduate studies personnel in the academic department. Confirm deadlines and all required application materials. Do NOT cut corners on the application; submit ALL requested materials.
Follow Up
Once your application materials have been sent, allow a week to 10 days, then follow up to confirm their receipt. Contact the graduate studies personnel periodically to check on the status of your application.
