Academic Opportunities

Putnam Competition
The William Lowell Putnam Competition is an annual math competition sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. More than 2000 undergraduates from colleges and universities throughout the US and Canada participate in this competition each December. Students compete individually or in teams appointed by their college, and the highest scoring candidates receive monetary awards. The top 500 competitors get placed on a national list.

The problems are challenging and require considerable ingenuity and insight. Little technical knowledge is needed beyond high school mathematics. The exam is designed to reward creativity and innovative thought rather than rote knowledge. Students interested in participating in the competition should email Professor Tangora at tangora@uic.edu.

Pi Mu Epsilon
Pi Mu Epsilon is an honorary mathematics society, founded in 1914 at Syracuse University. Its mission is to promote scholarly activity in mathematics. On campus contacts are David Maduram at dmadur1@uic.edu or Professor Richard Larson at rgl@uic.edu.

Minority Opportunities

Alliance for Minority Participation - UIC
AMP scholars are under-represented minority students (ie. African American, Native American, Latino) majoring in science, engineering or mathematics. These students are selected to assist in ESP workshops or do independent research. AMP scholars are awarded a $1500 stipend each semester.
