Beginner's Introduction to Maple in MathLab, 200 SEO

(User Caution: Instructions for Use of Maple on MathLab NeXT Machines in Room 200 SEO. Must Modify for Other Systems.)

Log onto any NeXT machine.

If the screen is black, then nudge the mouse and you will see a login screen come on. If not, try another machine.

Type your login name. (The NEXTSTEP Computer System is case sensitive, so type the proper upper or lower case for each letter.)
Press the Enter key.
Type your password (paying close attention to upper and lower case as well as special characters).

Running Maple

Double Click with the Mouse on the Maple icon on the Right Hand Side Dock (looks like a green maple leaf, but do not confuse it with the MaplePlot icon which has a maple leaf with a curve through it.) and you will get a Maple Worksheet window.
Click on the white area next to > prompt to make it ready of input with the prompt darkening
{Remark: NEXTSTEP works on a "Point & Click" method and Maple requires you to click for each new input line, not counting continued lines; when you want to quit type the command "quit" on the Worksheet command line and when asked for confirmation click OK on the panel.}
For Maple Help, after the > prompt type:
```
     >    ?
```
and you should get the beginning help window on your screen.
For a List of Maple functions, first click anywhere on the Worksheet window (note when you got the general help window, it became the Key window as indicated by the dark top bar of the help window; the Key window is the one where all your typed input goes), then type
```
     >    ?lib
```
For a short Maple Introduction, first click anywhere on the Worksheet window, then type
```
     >    ?intro
```

Little Maple Arithmetic Examples:

For a simple Maple Arithmetic Example, first click anywhere on the Worksheet window, then type
```
     >    1 * 4 / 2 -3;
```
{Semi-Colon Alert: Every Maple command line needs to be ended by a semi-colon (;), else Maple assumes you have not finished the line, even if you have pressed Return giving a new-line, and is waiting for continued input.}

For another Maple Arithmetic Example, first click anywhere on the Worksheet window, then type
```
     >    1 + 2 / 3 + 4^5;
```

For the Maple Floating Point Representation of the previous answer, type
```
     >    evalf(");
```

{Remark: The Maple function `evalf' computes the rounded 10 digit decimal form of its argument expression, which here uses the short hand notation double quote for the previous argument, saving retyping; type `?evalf' to get more help or find out how to specify the number of digits.}

More Maple Examples:

Maple introduction example: try the examples found at the end of the output file when ?intro is entered in Maple as above.
Maple tutorials: try the tutorial by getting a NeXT Terminal window by
- double clicking on the icon that looks like a computer display with the word "MACH" repeated over the screen;
- typing Maple in the terminal window and press Return, then:
- typing tutorial(1); at the ">" Maple prompt;
- following the directions by typing Return when asked and SPACE when asked for "More? or type:
- x to quit and type x again to quit and see the menu, selecting the last item to final quit;
- after quitting the Tutorial mode before all the tutorials are finished and are back in Maple mode you may type tutorial(<n>); for <n> = 2 or 3 or .. or 16 for one of the other tutorial sections that was listed in the menu upon quitting.
{Remark: Tutorials seem to work better in a terminal window with Line Edit Maple, except for the plots, than on a Maple worksheet.}
