The University of Illinois at Chicago—
All Learn Mathematics (ALM) Project
is a staff development project funded by the National Science Foundation and the Illinois State Board of Education. ALM has established partnerships with 44 Chicago public schools as part of a school-university initiative to improve the learning and teaching of mathematics in the elementary and middle grades.

The project incorporates the following components:

  • a comprehensive staff development program for teachers
  • in-school follow-up support
  • classroom implementation of innovative mathematics lessons
  • special math related programs for families and students
  • development of local mathematics leaders

ALM supports teachers on an on-going basis in the classroom, at staff development sessions, and via the telephone and e-mail.

ALM STAFF DEVELOPMENT

ALM teachers participate in a minimum of 100 hours of staff development including 56 hours in the classroom.

Staff development sessions are conducted as seminar/discussion groups and focus on problem solving, where teachers are actively exploring, sharing, and discussing mathematics.
