TIMS Pre/Posttest Grading Instructions

TIMS Student Assessment Checklist

The TIMS pre- and posttests for Grades 1 and 2 consist of the first 10 questions of the corresponding tests for Grades 3–8. The pre/posttests for Grades 3–8 are comprised of 39 problems, including the first 10 questions from Grades 1 and 2 tests. The pre-test should be administered once in the beginning of the first school year that TIMS is used and the posttests at the end of the first year and a different version each subsequent school year. One TIMS test (pre- or post-) is administered to all the children. This means that a 4th grader will not be able to answer the same number of the pretest questions as an 8th grader. But now we can easily follow the intrinsic age-level development of the children to see how this compares to their posttest results. Remember, a child pretested in September is not the same child posttested in June. Our approach allows us to compensate for this and better enables you to evaluate the children’s year-end progress. The TIMS Project has collected test data for some 10,000 Chicago area children, and you might want to see how your students compare with this group.

The assessment checklist can be used when assessing student work with individual investigations. That is, using the checklist while observing the children doing the investigations, you can monitor their progress in the various skill areas, such as keeping track of variables, data collecting, labeling pictures, graphs, etc. This, along with their answers to the comprehension questions in each experiment, will allow you to draw a complete picture of their progress.
