Family Math Leadership WorkshopsUICs Institute for Mathematics and Science Education and Office of Mathematics and Computer Education conduct Family Math Leadership Workshops for schools, libraries, churches, community organizations, and other groups. Family Math Leadership Workshops prepare participants to conduct Family Math programs in their own schools and communities. UIC Family Math Leadership Workshops are endorsed by EQUALS, the University of California organization that developed and monitors Family Math. Family Math was created to bring parents and children together to learn mathematics. Families doing Family Math interact around mathematical ideas as they enjoy many stimulating activities and games. Family Math involves parents as active partners in their childrens education, introduces families to key mathematical principles, develops students critical and logical thinking skills, and connects mathematics to everyday life. Teachers, parents, and other leaders are eligible to attend the leadership workshops. Participants receive a hands-on introduction to Family Math activities, discuss issues in organizing Family Math classes, present Family Math lessons in small groups, and begin planning their own Family Math programs. We encourage organizations to form a Family Math leadership team for the leadership workshop. Family Math Leadership Workshops are arranged individually with schools and organizations.
