MCS 595 Graduate Seminar, Fall 2008

Our first organizational meeting was held on Thursday 28 August in SEO 1227 at 1PM. Usually, we meet on Thursdays in SEO 612 at 11AM.
  1. Thu 28 Aug: organizational meeting in SEO 1227 at 1PM. We decided on the theme of the seminar: decomposition algorithms in algebraic geometry and made up a preliminary schedule. Except for two times when we meet on Friday, Sep 11 and 18 at 2PM, we will always meet in SEO 612 at 11AM.

  3. Fri 11 Sep: Alexey Ovchinnikov talked on splitting.
  4. Fri 18 Sep: Alexey Ovchinnikov continued splitting.

  6. Thu 2 Oct: Anton Leykin gives a preview of his talk in Vancouver.
  7. Thu 9 Oct: Sonja Petrovic on algebraic geometry of Bayesian networks.
  8. Thu 16 Oct: Dimitris Diochnos gives a computer demonstration of primary decomposition in Macaulay2.
  9. Thu 23 Oct: Macaulay2 demonstration continued.

  11. Thu 6 Nov: Numerical irreducible decomposition and tropical algebraic geometry.
  12. Thu 13 Nov: Danko Adrovic on a tropical algorithm to find a common factor of multivariate polynomials with complex coefficients.
  13. Thu 20 Nov: Alexey Ovchinnikov on primary decomposition for zero dimensional ideals.
  14. Thu 27 Nov: Thanksgiving, no meeting.
  15. Thu 4 Dec: Yun Guan gives a preview of her talk at the AMS joint meetings in Washington.
