The Mathematicians and Education Reform (MER) Forum seeks the effective participation of mathematicians in mathematics education reform at the K-12, undergraduate, and graduate levels, and the recognition of the importance of these efforts to the well being of the mathematics community. The MER Forum envisages the pursuit of educational reform through informed discussion of educational issues, thoughtful responses to changing educational conditions, and the promotion of exemplary programs. The creation and support of a network of mathematicians with a sustained commitment to mathematics education is central to this vision.
In accord with its mission, The MER Forum has built a program of inter-connected educational activities for mathematicians. MER's national workshops and professional programs offer venues for mathematicians, who are engaged in educational projects, to meet face-to-face to exchange ideas, showcase their efforts, and share resources and expertise for planning and implementing programs. Collegial ties are maintained and the dissemination of information is supported through the printed publication of the MER Newsletter, the e-mail posting of the MER eNews, the publication of volumes of collected articles of mathematicians' educational work, and personal conversations with participants of past MER activities. Through its national contacts with professional mathematics organizations and its grassroots ties with participants of MER programs, The MER Forum is able to identify educational issues of current concern to mathematicians and respond promptly with appropriate programming.
