This program prepares future actuaries beyond the basics, by an enriched program involving courses in business, finance, and many other choices in addition to core actuarial training. This prepares future actuaries for high-end roles in insurance and related industries.
For detailed information see the program's own webpage at http://www.math.umn.edu
Participating students regularly take courses in the School of Management, for accounting, finance, and other background.
This program began in 1983, but has taken off slowly because we have wanted to ensure the quality of our M.S. level actuarial studies by selective admissions and careful development of the program structure to meet contemporary marketplace demands.
Students come to this program with degrees in Math, Economics, Business or the equivalent, with sufficiently strong mathematical preparation. The program prepares them for professional actuary careers. Our graduates have enjoyed a great variety of job opportunities, both in the U.S. and abroad.
Students in this program are often supported by teaching assistantships during the nine-month academic year (about $12,700 for 2000-2001), and additional summer funding from teaching or other appointments or summer fellowships in our department (about $2,500 in summer 2000). Such support includes tuition and an insurance package. In some cases internships become available which can replace the assistantship funding.
