The program began in 1996, and we have been working to refine the coursework we offer to students pursuing this degree program. In addition to meeting local requirements, we offer courses that illustrate exciting developments within mathematics, and applications of mathematics to the world, that will provide inspiration to future teachers as well as offering them ideas and content to pass on to their future students. We run this program in cooperation with the Mathematics Education group in the College of Education.
Students enter the program with a degree that includes most of an undergraduate math major. This can be either a mathematics degree or a suitable education degree. Our graduates are highly sought-after high school teachers of mathematics.
Typically students in this program are supported by teaching assistantships during the nine-month academic year (about $12,700 for 2000-2001), and additional summer funding from teaching or research appointments or summer fellowships in our department (about $2,500 in summer 2000). Support includes tuition and an insurance package.
