The primary objective of this masters program is to provide an education in statistics to the student who wishes to become a professional statistician in business, industry, or government. Moreover, this program provides excellent preparation for the student who subsequently wishes to pursue the Ph.D.

This is a joint program offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and the Department of Applied Statistics and Operations Research.
The prerequisites for this degree program include preparation in statistics, linear algebra, and advanced calculus. Students who do not meet all of these requirements may be permitted to enter the program and make up any deficiencies in the first year.
In the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, financial aid is available to qualified students in the form of teaching assistantships ($9,200-$10,000 for Masters students for the nine-month academic year plus full tuition and general fees) and non-service fellowships. Summer support in the range of $1,370 - $2,900 is also available; new students are encouraged to participate in a six week Summer Fellowship Program which carries a stipend of $1800. In the Department of Applied Statistics and Operations Research, financial aid is available to qualified students in the form of teaching or research assistantships. These range from 1/4-time assistantships ($4,100 for the nine- month academic year plus full tuition and general fees) to 1/2-time assistantships ($8,200 for the nine-month academic year plus full tuition and general fees). In addition, a limited number of summer assistantships are available worth $2,050. Interested parties may apply to either, but not both Departments.
