Description
Limits, differentiation, curve sketching, maximum-minimum problems, related rates, mean-value theorem, anti-derivative, Riemann integral, logarithm, and exponential functions. Credit is not given for MATH 180 if the student has credit for MATH 165.

 

Prerequisite

Grade of C or better in MATH 121 or appropriate performance on the department placement test or a MATH ACT sub-score of 28.

 

Textbook

Calculus, Early transcendentals,  by Jon Rogawski, W. H. Freeman.

Quizzes

Quizzes will be given in discussion classes on Tuesdays or Thursdays and calculators are not allowed. No quiz in the exam weeks.

 

Examinations

Examinations will be given in lecture classes and calculators are not allowed.

Students who fail to take the final exam will receive a grade of F for the course. Conflicts with the final exam schedules should be resolved by consulting the directions given in the official published course timetable by UIC.

 

Grading

 

               Quizzes and/or Homework                    100 points

               Midterm Examination 1                          100 points

               Midterm Examination 2                          100 points

               Final Examination                                   200 points

               Total:                                                     500 points

 

               The letter grades are given roughly based on the following:

 

                                F:     0 - 299 points

                                D: 300 - 349 points

                                C: 350 - 399 points

                                B: 400 - 449 points

                                A: 450 - 500 points

 

               But the “Grade Curve” will NOT be determined until after the final examination.

 

Make-up policies

No make-up will be given for exams, quizzes and homework assignments, unless the student has written documentation of an illness (doctor's explanation, hospital record, etc.) and reasonable issues.
