The Emerging Scholars Program (ESP) offers an opportunity to work on
challenging mathematics problems with classmates through innovative techniques
of cooperative learning.
Students meet for a regularly scheduled two hour workshop weekly to work
collaboratively in small groups on math problems that emphasize the key
ideas of the corresponding math course(see below). A trained teaching
assistant and undergraduate AMP Scholar oversee the workshops. Students
receive one hours credit (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory).
ESP workshops are offered in conjunction with, and supplement required
mathematics courses including Math 121, Math 180, Math 181, Math 210,
and Math 220 (see timetable under Math 122, Math 179, Math 182, Math 211
and Math 294).
Physics workshops are available for students enrolled in introductory
Physics 105, 106, 121 and 144. Workshops meet two hours per week (one
two-hours session). A trained teaching assistant and AMP Scholar facilitate
the small groups (See timetable under Phys 104, Phys 122 and Phys 144).
Students receive on hour credit (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory).
A list of available workshop times can be found on-line. Workshops are offered in the fall and spring.

Statistical study results find participation in the
workshops improves student performance and increase the probability of
earning an A or B in the required math and physics courses.
