Hours: TH 300, Tuesday & Thursday 2-3pm
Quiz: 80
points
Given on every
Thursday in week 1-14, testing what is covered
in 3 most
recent lectures (FMW).
The first
one is for practice only.
The lowest 3
quizzes (out of 13) will be dropped. No make-ups.
Homework: 40
points (NEW)
NEW: Graded by an undergrad grader, 1 point
for completeness,
i.e.,
completing 80%; 1 point for
correctness of one problem chosen
randomly
from the sections which have been covered in lecture.
Homework problems will be collected at the
beginning of each lecture.
Go to http://www.math.uic.edu/math180/assign.htm
for assignments.
NEW: you should include
the problems assigned before lecture into
the homework after lecture.
For example, it says On 10/28 the lecture
covers 4.1, and homework due
is 3.10 #9, 11, 13, 15; 4.1 #10, 11, 13,
17, 27, 33;
Our new policy asks you can leave 4.1
#10, 11, 13, 17, 27, 33 to next
assignment
(that will be collected on 10/30).
This change makes you include all problems from
one section in one homework.
One has to complete at least 80% of the homework
to get a full credit.
No late homework will be accepted, no make-ups.
Hour Exams:
100 points each (Friday, 10/4 and Friday, 11/15)
A make-up
will be only given to one with an acceptable excuse and
a notice to
the instructor in 3-day advance.
Absence with
a valid excuse (e.g. illness and emergence) and a notice
no later
than the same day of exam will not receive a make-up, but one
will be
credited with a score having the same percent as her/his final exam
at the end
of the term.
Departmental
Final Exam: 200 points (Thursday, December 12, 1-3 pm)
Anyone with
a final exam conflict should discuss the possibility
of makeup
with the instructor no later than December 4, 2002.

How
to know your term grade:
Your total
score (out of 520 possible points) determines your letter grade.
Percentages
of A, B, etc. in our class will almost be the same as the percentages of A, B,
etc
issued in
the final. So it is hard to tell you grade exactly before we finish the grading
of whole class.
But the
following seems hold based on our experience (but not
guaranteed):
1.
Your
term grade is no lower than the lowest grades of your 3 exams,
nor higher than the
highest ones.
e.g. if you receive
one B and 2 Cs in exams, very likely your term grade will be
C or B (unless you did
not do homework or quizzes at all).
2.
Roughly
speaking, 90% = 468 points or higher suggests an A,
75 89% = B, 60-75%
= C, 50-60% = D, 50% or lower = E.
The policy
in this page overwrites the one in the general page in
case of
conflicts.
