Formal Group Laws and Complex Orientations

**Abstract:**We will discuss formal group laws along with the Lazard ring which classifies them. Then we will discuss cohomology theories and some nice properties they might have, such as being complex-orientable. We will see how a formal group law arises from a complex-oriented cohomology theory, and we will discuss $MU$, the complex cobordism spectrum, which turns out to be the universal example of such a thing. We will conclude the discussion with Quillen's theorem, which relates the Lazard ring to $MU$.
