Course description and syllabus

Text: Calculus by Stewart We are using the second edition. In two semesters math 210 will be switching books to Calculus by Hughes-Hallett, et al. (Wiley).
Use of Maple: The Maple programming language will be used to explore concepts in Mathematics 210.
PREREQUISITE: A grade of C or better in Math 181, or 132(quarter), placement into Math 210 by Mathematics proficiency exam, or, 4 or 5 on the BC AP exam.
Assignments: You are encouraged to discuss homework problems with your colleagues and to work together. Working in groups makes explaining approaches and solutions a part of the process and helps you learn.
Maple Problems: These problems will be assigned from time to time and will be collected. They are structured so that you may use any of the PC Labs on campus to perform the work. Maple Assignments

Grading: While each instructor will announce his grading scheme, in general grades will be based on:

Problems (100 points for problems attempted)
Quizzes (100 points) These will be frequent, very brief and based on material discussed in class.
Hour Exams (100 points each) schedule to be announced, three are anticipated.
Final Exam (200 points).
