Math 546 - Introduction to Dynamical Systems, Spring 2008 Dynamical systems is a very rich and still growing area of mathematical research, which studies a wide variety of examples and phenomenon that arise from nature, physics, computer science and many areas of pure mathematics. This course will give a broad introduction to dynamical systems, illustrated by applying the theory developed to a selection of some classical examples and some much more recent fundamental ones. |
Math 539 - Introduction to Functional Analysis, Fall 2008 The aim of this course is to give an introduction to Functional Analysis, with a view towards applications in geometry, representation theory, C*-algebras and dynamical systems. In particular, we will cover aspects of the theory of Banach and Hilbert spaces, the Hahn-Banach theorem, the Open Mapping and Closed Graph Theorems, linear operators, compact operators and the spectral theorem for bounded operators on Hilbert space. As time and class interest permits, applications of these ideas to other fields will be discussed. |
Math 589 - Teaching and Presentation of Mathematics, Fall 2008 This two credit hour course assists teaching assistants in improving teaching skills and in addressing problems that may arise in the classroom. |
