Course description and syllabus

• Text: Calculus by Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, et al. This book was developed by the Calculus Consortium based at Harvard to emphasize a thorough understanding of the material in order to prepare students better to use calculus. Please read the preface and the note to students. You should plan to read the textbook more closely than in more typical calculus courses and before the classroom discussion of a topic as indicated on the schedule of reading assignments.
• Calculator: Use of a graphing calculator will be an integral part of the course. Instructors will be using the TI-82. Any graphing calculator you now own will be adequate. The TI-81 is sufficient for the course. You should shop around for a good price.
• Assignments: You are encouraged to discuss homework problems with your colleagues and to work together. Working in groups makes explaining approaches and solutions a part of the process and helps you learn. Your goal is to find solutions and to communicate your work in a convincing manner.
• Grading: Grades will be based on:
  1. Problems (100 points for problems attempted)
  2. Quizzes (100 points) These will be frequent, very brief and based on material discussed in class.
  3. Hour Exams (100 points each) scheduled for February 16 and March 29.
  4. Final Exam (200 points).
• Our course is designed to help you do what is needed to learn mathematics: read, question, experiment, think, talk, and write.
