Breakout Sessions for Thursday, April 23, 2020
Megan Bang, Northwestern University
In this workshop we will explore a developing model of field-based science education for K-12 students, called the seasonal storyline. This storyline was co-designed with educators, students, families, and community-based organizations in an effort to reimagine science education as a place that simultaneously transforms issues of inequality and injustice – social and ecological. In this session we will explore the central frameworks and practices of the model. For example, we will explore teaching with socio-ecological histories of places, developing “should we” questions to drive learning, and engaging students’ and their families’ cultural identities and knowledges. Further participants will explore data of student and teacher work to see examples of implementation.
Vilma Mesa, University of Michigan
In this session we will focus on the underlying conceptualization guiding the development of an instrument that was used to assess the quality of instruction in community college algebra lessons. Evaluating the Quality of Instruction in Post-secondary Mathematics (EQIPM) provides language that can be used to identify evidence of interactions between students, instructors, and mathematics and to discern the extent to which the evidence represents high-quality instruction. We will work with the definition of an item in the instrument, Connecting Across Representations-Instructor, to illustrate what the item captures and what the rating of quality means. We will use actual video to illustrate the coding and discuss the potential of the tool for professional development.
