An Outline of the Classification of Surface Diffeomorphisms
Abstract: We will go over the first chapter of (the English translation of) Fathi, Laudenbach, and Poenaru's paper on Thurston's work on surface diffeomorphisms and Teichmuller space. The talk will be light on details, but filled with grand ideas, and will outline the work that our graduate seminar will be examining for the next several talks.
