Phylogenetic Algebraic Geometry
Abstract: Phylogenetics is a field that involves biology and genetics, algebraic geometry, statistics, polyhedral geometry, and algorithm analysis. The basic objects of study are phylogenetic trees, defining graphical models with hidden nodes. We will get familiar with the basic biological and statistical motivations for these objects, and see how they give rise to algebraic varieties, following the usual story of algebraic statistics. We will cover some of the main definitions and survey a few of the results from the algebraic, geometric and computational point of view. In particular, we will see how the "Salmon problem" fits into the big picture.
