Elegant aliens: about some exotic infinite groups
Abstract: In this talk I will discuss a remarkable class of infinite discrete groups, known as exotic $\tilde{A}_2$-groups. These are close relatives to lattices in SL(3,Q_p), but they are not linear. They act on very nice CAT(0) simplicial complexes, have property (T), have no infinite factors, cannot act on a circle, do not embed in hyperbolic groups or Mapping Class Groups, etc. The main new result that I want to describe is a strong form of non-linearity, recently proven by Bader, Caprace and Lecureux.
