Summary of Changes & Results in Developmental Math and Calculus AY2015-16
Abstract: When we started our positions as Director of Calculus and Director of Developmental Math last July, we defined our goals to be:
• Improve student’s success rates in Developmental Math and Calculus. • Students passing a prerequisite course are well prepared for the following course. • Reduce the number of semesters students spend taking non-credit bearing courses.
To work towards these goals, we strengthened the coordination of the courses, implemented active learning, integrated new assessment tools, and will be adding co-requisite options starting next fall.
In this end of the year session, we will share the challenges we faced and the changes that we implemented at UIC in the past year that led to passing rates that were 20 percentage points higher in Pre-Calculus and Calculus than the previous year. In addition, we will share our plans for next year and hope to have a good discussion about our programs.
